Forest School
Rooted in nature, Growing in knowledge
Forest school is a nature-immersed educational program that prioritizes the comprehensive growth and development of children. It entails sustained, ongoing engagement rather than sporadic sessions, guided by certified forest school professionals. With an emphasis on child-centeredness, there is a significant adult-to-child ratio to ensure optimal supervision and support. Through astute observation as opposed to directive instruction, our approach can be customized according to the specific requirements of each group we serve.
The Six
Principles
Forest School is defined by 6 core principles, which were agreed by the Forest School community in 2011.
Long Term Principle
Forest School is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than one-off or infrequent visits. The cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
Nature Principle
Forest School takes place in a natural or woodland environment to support the development of a lifelong relationship between the learner and the natural world.
Holistic Learning Principle
Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
Risk Principle
Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
Leadership Principle
Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners, who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
Community Principle
Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
